The course: "English I: My Identity" holds significant importance in the B.A. in Modern Languages with emphasis on English as being the first of eight English courses. This course embodies a holistic shift in perspective where English is learned as a means and not an end, which, in turn, promotes a more holistic and inclusive approach to language education, where the goal is not just linguistic proficiency but also personal growth, intercultural competence, and the empowerment of individuals to navigate and contribute meaningfully to a diverse global society. This approach encourages learners to explore their own backgrounds, experiences, and values, thereby enriching their understanding of both themselves and others. Therefore, this is the beginning of a formative process where future English teachers become aware of the importance of recognizing themselves as: future Colombian English teachers. Consequently, this course opens the possibility for future English teachers to come into contact with diverse interculturalities, as opposed to only developing English language skills. As a result of it, “sharing with the other is practically the only way to realize what power relationships and realities exist within cultural structures which, in turn, will build social subjects” (Ramos-Holguin & Aguirre-Morales, 2022, p. 4).
